Deputy Forest Supervisor Will Metz announces that we are currently accepting applications for temporary and permanent wildland firefighter positions on the Six Rivers National Forest. These new positions support the National Fire Plan, which outlines the Forest Service's strategy to address catastrophic wildfires across the country.

According to Forest Fire Management Officer John Wendt, "We are still in the buildup stage with hiring yet to do. In addition to the 39 permanent positions and approximately 50 temporary firefighters we need to staff engines and hand crews, there is space for eight apprentice positions." The apprentices' hired will perform a combination of work, study and training at an academy and upon completion be appointed to permanent positions. "The excitement lies in the fact that we're not just offering jobs, but careers in many cases. The national, indeed international, situation with wildland fires is one of increasing complexity and the employees we are now hiring will witness and direct events we can only imagine," adds Wendt.

A national, centralized process is being used to advertise and recruit for these new positions. Interested persons are encouraged to submit an application as soon as possible, as selections are currently being made to allow time for firefighter training prior to fire season. Basic qualifications are being 18 years of age or older and a U.S. citizenship. Some positions may require passing an arduous physical fitness test and drug testing.

Wendt encourages applicants to apply for these positions online. Applicants can easily access the centralized hiring system by going to the Six Rivers National Forest website or directly online at the Avue Digital Services website. An application package can also be requested by contacting Six Rivers Human Resources at (707) 441-3548, TTY: (707) 442-1721, or by visiting your local Forest Service Office.
