UPDATE - Highway 199 has since been re-opened.

The Signal Fire was detected late yesterday afternoon off Highway 199, two miles north of Hiouchi, California in the Six River National Forest, Smith River National Recreation Area. There are firefighter and public safety concerns due to very steep slopes causing rocks, logs and debris rolling to the road. This caused the closure of Highway 199 from Gasquet, CA to Hiouchi, CA. The road may be reopened early evening today. The fire is under investigation.

The fire is approximately 35 acres and is burning in large timber and heavy brush on 100% slopes. It is 30% contained. Resources on scene include one Incident Commander, three 20 person crews, four engines and three water tenders.
