Tyrone Kelley, Six Rivers National Forest Supervisor, reminds the public that permits are required to harvest Matsutake (tanoak) mushrooms on National Forest System lands. According to Kelley, "Permits are available for commercial harvesting as well as for personal use. These permits contain conditions that are designated both to insure for the sustainability of the mushroom resource and to protect other National Forest resources." This year, the Matsutake mushroom season is different on individual Ranger Districts of the Six Rivers National Forest.

On the Smith River National Recreation Area/Gasquet Ranger District and the Lower Trinity Ranger District, the 2006 harvesting season will open November 1 and close December 31. Permits for commercial harvesting of Matsutake mushrooms went on sale Wednesday, November 1 on these two Ranger Districts.

On the Orleans/Ukonom Ranger District the 2006 harvesting season will open November 15 and close December 15. Permits for commercial harvesting of Matsutake mushrooms on the Orleans/Ukonom Ranger District will be sold starting Wednesday November 8 in preparation for the season.

Four types of commercial permits are available for purchase:

  1. Minimum two (2) day permit for $20.00
  2. Three (3) day permit for $25.00
  3. Seven (7) day permit for $50.00
  4. One (1) month permit for $100.00

Personal use permits are free and must be obtained prior to an individual harvesting Matsutake mushrooms for their personal use. Additional Information (pdf 38kb) »

Forest Service Law Enforcement personnel will be patrolling and conducting checkpoints to enforce permit conditions. It is the permit holder’s responsibility to read and understand these conditions prior to picking. Mushroom harvesters found to be in noncompliance of permit conditions or do who not have a permit in their possession will be issued a Federal Violation Notice under the Code of Federal Regulations. Violations of the Code of Federal Regulations are punishable by fines of not more than $5,000.00 and/or six months imprisonment.

Permits will be available Monday through Friday at the following locations:

  • Lower Trinity Ranger District, Willow Creek, CA, (530) 629-2118 8:00 am to 4:30 pm
  • Gasquet Ranger District/Smith River National Recreation Area, Gasquet, CA, (707) 457-3131 8:00 am to 4:30 pm
