According to Lower Trinity District Ranger Ann Garland, "The Tunnel Flat River access has been temporarily blocked to vehicle access due to illegal dumping of household garbage and associated resource damage." Tunnel Flat is located east of Salyer off Highway 299. Illegal dumping into the Trinity River has been occurring for several years in numerous places along the river access road precipitating the need for resource protection. "We are not blocking access, but for a while, the public will have to walk a little farther to get to the river," continued Garland.

The long term plan is to make improvements to the site that will allow for vehicle access while protecting the resource values of the area. "I am pleased to announce that the Trinity Resource Advisory Committee (RAC) approved $44,831 to implement the necessary improvements at the site," said Garland. These improvements include the construction of a new parking area, improvement and upgrade of Forest Service Road 6N51 and installation of a safety bulletin board and river access sign. These improvements are expected to be completed by the fall, at which time vehicle access will be allowed.
