Small Business Innovation Research and Small Business Technology TransferHuman health and human disease result from three interactive elements: environmental exposures, genetic susceptibility and age. The mission of the NIEHS is to reduce the burden of human disease and dysfunction from environmental causes by understanding each of these components and how they interrelate. NIEHS achieves its mission through a multidisciplinary biomedical research program, prevention and intervention efforts, and a communication strategy that encompasses training, education, and technology transfer and community outreach. NIEHS supports research and training focused on the identification, assessment and mechanism of action of agents in the environment and how they contribute to disease and dysfunction. The ultimate goal of these activities is to transfer this knowledge for the public benefit. The SBIR program uses a combination of research, technology transfer and communication strategies to aid the mission of NIEHS. The NIEHS is a strong supporter of the NIH SBIR/STTR program with an annual commitment of over $13 million per year. The program is divided into grants and contracts. Grant applications are accepted in response to the NIH Omnibus solicitation using the SF424 electronic application process. The Grant solicitation is released in early spring of each year and has 3 receipt dates: April 5, August 5 and December 5. For detailed information on the NIH SBIR/STTR grants program link to:
NIEHS also accepts SBIR applications through the annual NIH contract solicitation, which is released in the Commerce Business Daily and also on the NIH Web site each October. The receipt date for this solicitation is mid-November of that year. Currently NIEHS does not have any Institute-specific announcements. The Worker Education and Training program anticipates a solicitation in May with a receipt date in August.
