The Six Rivers National Forest is hosting the continuation of a series of workshops on the progress of its Travel Management Route Designation Process, a national effort that all 156 national forests must complete as required by the 2005 Travel Management Rule.
The purpose of the workshops is to share information, review and determine if traveled routes have been identified, and gather additional information to help in developing site- specific proposals for changes to the Lower Trinity and Mad River Ranger Districts' motorized transportation system. According to Forest Supervisor Tyrone Kelley, "We want to identify any additional opportunities and benefits as well as hear concerns with individual routes being considered." This input will ultimately serve as the basis for development of a proposed action to be analyzed under the National Environmental Policy Act.
For people who are already involved in the motor vehicle route designation process, this continues their important role in making this process a success. For newcomers, the workshops provide an opportunity to better understand the process and how they can provide valuable input.
Two public workshops are scheduled for 10:00 am to 4:00 pm at the Six Rivers National Forest Headquarters, 1330 Bayshore Way, Eureka, CA on the following dates:
- May 31, 2008
- June 28, 2008
These workshops will be open house style and informal. No formal presentations are scheduled. People are invited to come in any time during these 10:00 am to 4:00 pm workshops to help finalize the initial steps of the process. Six Rivers National Forest employees will be present to meet with members of the public one-on-one to collect additional information and answer questions.
As part of this planning process, the public is encouraged to determine if traveled routes have been identified, and provide additional information identifying opportunities and benefits as well as concerns with individual routes being considered. Public comments need to be received by June 30, 2008 in order to be considered in these initial phases of the planning process.
