Chippewa County |
Chippewa County is located in west central Wisconsin and was created in 1845 from Crawford County by the Legislature of the Territory of Wisconsin. At that time the county was much larger and encompassed points from Lake Pepin to what is now Iron County, near Hurley.
The boundaries of Chippewa County were redrawn after Wisconsin became a state in 1848 so many times that, with all the territory that had been shifted to other jurisdictions, Chippewa has been referred to as the "mother" county of northwestern Wisconsin. It was named after the Ojibwe Nation.
The county seat is Chippewa Falls.
Population: 56,773 (2003 estimate) Land Area: 1,010 square miles
