IN RESPONSE, PLEASE June 22, 2007
The Commission was briefed by the NRC staff and representatives of Nuclear Fuel Services (NFS) on safety and security concerns discussed at the NRC Agency Action Review Meeting held April 18, 2007. The staff, working with staff from Naval Reactors and the Department of Energy (DOE), should reevaluate the criteria used to withhold from public disclosure, information deemed to be security related for those fuel facilities where NRC, DOE, and Naval Reactors have a role. The staff should report to the Commission the results of the reevaluation. The Commission encouraged that discussions regarding licensee’s performance and response to NRC oversight activities associated with NRC Agency Action Review Meetings be as open to the public as possible. A transcript of this Commission briefing should be reviewed by appropriate NRC staff, Naval Reactors, and the Department of Energy to determine if there are any portions of it that can not be made public because of security reasons.
