Portage County is located in central Wisconsin and was created in 1836 as a territorial county.  In 1841 its boundaries were extended, making Portage County the third largest county in the Wisconsin Territory.  Several neighboring counties were split off before the present boundaries of Portage County were settled in 1856. 

 

The county seat is Stevens Point.

 

Population:    67,386 (2003 estimate)
Land Area:     806 square miles
