IN RESPONSE, PLEASE July 3, 2008
The Commission was briefed by an industry panel and the staff on the status of new reactor issues. The industry panel provided an update on new plant status, outlined industry priorities, and discussed seismic activities related to new plants. The staff panel provided a status of new reactor projects, and discussed seismic evaluations and operator knowledge and abilities. The staff should consider how to improve its public information tools for explaining its licensing process and providing current review schedules for new reactor design certifications, early site permits, and combined license applications. The Commission paper and the draft Federal Register notice for the Part 73 rulemaking should be made publicly available at the same time it is sent to the Commission. The staff should continue to monitor industry interest in and progress towards the development of potential license applications for advanced reactors. The staff should bring promptly to the Commission's attention any attendant budget or resource needs related to review of advanced reactor applications, should such applications appear likely.
