MEMORANDUM TO: L. Joseph Callan
Executive Director for Operations
FROM: John C. Hoyle, Secretary /s/
SUBJECT: STAFF REQUIREMENTS - BRIEFING ON STATUS OF SEVERE ACCIDENT MASTER INTEGRATION PLAN (SECY- 97- 132), 1:00 P.M., TUESDAY, OCTOBER 14, 1997, COMMISSIONERS' CONFERENCE ROOM, ONE WHITE FLINT NORTH, ROCKVILLE, MARYLAND (OPEN TO PUBLIC ATTENDANCE)

The Commission was briefed by the NRC staff on the progress in implementing the remaining elements of the integration plan for closure of severe accidents. The Commission emphasized the importance of establishing clear criteria for bringing the remaining issues to closure and engaging the international community in the analytical and experimental programs. The Commission requested a prioritized list based on risk and other considerations describing the work required for closure of the remaining severe accident issues. This list should include the degree of closure, and whether the staff has narrowed the uncertainties sufficiently to understand how to manage the issues. The Commission requested that the staff leverage their knowledge gained and lessons learned from the Severe Accident Program into other areas.

(EDO) (SECY Suspense:   10/31/97)

The staff was also requested to describe any subtle affects that the ongoing activities involving plutonium disposition and revision of the source term would have on the current list of risk-contributors and their relative ranking.
