The Commission was briefed by members of the NRC staff on progress in the use of performance assessment analyses in evaluating long-term performance of low-level waste disposal, high-level waste disposal, and site decommissioning. Although there were no formal requirements identified for staff action, the Commission encouraged the staff to continue to develop performance assessment models and techniques, to exchange knowledge and experience with those working both within and outside the agency in the performance assessment area, and to consider developing further regulatory guidance and making available portions of the performance assessment codes that would have practical value for NRC licensees in responding to regulatory requirements.
