SUBJECT: STAFF REQUIREMENTS - MEETING WITH ADVISORY COMMITTEE ON REACTOR SAFEGUARDS (ACRS), 9:30 A.M., FRIDAY, OCTOBER 6, 2000, COMMISSIONERS' CONFERENCE ROOM, ONE WHITE FLINT NORTH, ROCKVILLE, MARYLAND (OPEN TO PUBLIC ATTENDANCE)

The Commission was briefed by members of the ACRS on the following topics:

  1. Risk-Informing 10 CFR Part 50
  2. Quality of Probabilistic Risk Assessments
  3. Spent Fuel Pool Fire Safety
  4. More Realistic (Best Estimate) Thermal-Hydraulic Codes

The Committee should provide a more detailed discussion on how the perceived weaknesses with industry-developed thermal-hydraulic codes (noted on slides 52 through 56 of the ACRS presentation) may adversely affect the NRC's regulatory role and provide more specific recommendations on how those weaknesses should be addressed.
