MEMORANDUM TO: | William D. Travers Executive Director for Operations |
FROM: | Annette L. Vietti-Cook, Secretary /s/ |
SUBJECT: | STAFF REQUIREMENTS - BRIEFING ON NATIVE AMERICAN, STATE OF NEVADA, AND AFFECTED UNITS OF LOCAL GOVERNMENT REPRESENTATIVES RESPONSES TO DOE'S DRAFT ENVIRONMENTAL IMPACT STATEMENT (DEIS) FOR A PROPOSED HLW GEOLOGIC REPOSITORY, 9:00 A.M., FRIDAY, JANUARY 21, 2000, COMMISSIONERS' CONFERENCE ROOM, ONE WHITE FLINT NORTH, ROCKVILLE, MARYLAND (OPEN TO PUBLIC ATTENDANCE) |
The Commission was briefed by representatives of tribal governments, the State of Nevada, and Affected Units of Local Government (AULG) on their preliminary responses to DOE's Draft Environmental Impact Statement (DEIS) for a proposed HLW geologic repository.
Mr. Robert Loux, the representative of the State of Nevada, stated that he will provide additional information to the Commission on why he believes the proposed action is inconsistent with the Nuclear Waste Policy Act and why he believes the DOE DEIS is substantively deficient in its analysis of socioeconomic impacts (e.g., potential impacts on tourism). Mr. Loux also indicated that he would provide NRC with a copy of the data and analysis that Nevada provided to DOE on the negative impacts on commercial and residential development based on their proximity to nuclear facilities.
During the briefing, Mr. Mike Baughman, a representative of AULG, provided a copy of the AULG's preliminary comments to DOE to the Office of the Secretary. This document was immediately distributed to Commission offices.
There were no requirements identified for staff action.
