IN RESPONSE, PLEASE
REFER TO: M040302B

March 16, 2004

MEMORANDUM TO: William D. Travers
Executive Director for Operations
FROM: Annette L. Vietti-Cook, Secretary /RA/
SUBJECT: STAFF REQUIREMENTS - MEETING WITH THE ADVISORY COMMITTEE ON THE MEDICAL USES OF ISOTOPES (ACMUI) AND THE NRC STAFF, 9:30 A.M., TUESDAY, MARCH 2, 2004, COMMISSIONERS' CONFERENCE ROOM, ONE WHITE FLINT NORTH, ROCKVILLE, MARYLAND (OPEN TO PUBLIC ATTENDANCE)

The Commission was briefed by the NRC staff and the Advisory Committee on the Medical Uses of Isotopes (ACMUI). As previously directed, the staff should carefully review the alternate dose reconstruction methodology submitted by the Society of Nuclear Medicine and provide the results of its assessment, which considers the ACMUI's independent analysis. The staff should also provide the Commission with a copy of the ACMUI analysis.

The staff should also provide the Commission with recommendations concerning the current definition of medical event and how to communicate effectively to the public associated risks, if any. In developing recommendations, the staff should confirm that there was an appropriate basis, for applying the 20% reporting threshold for medical events to each modality, in the final Part 35 rule that became effective in October 2002. The staff should involve ACMUI in the development of these recommendations.

The staff should continue its dialogue with ACMUI as it develops the proposed final rule amending Part 35 concerning training and experience requirements.
