Bayfield County |
Bayfield County is located in northwest Wisconsin. Originally named LaPointe County, this county was formed in 1845 from Ashland County. In 1866 the name of LaPointe County was changed to Bayfield County, after Henry Wolsey Bayfield, a British officer who made the first survey of the Great Lakes area. The county seat was originally the Village of LaPointe on nearby Madeline Island, but a referenda election in 1892 changed the county seat to the City of Washburn. The Red Cliff Band of Lake Superior Chippewa Reservation is in Bayfield County.
