Student Employment Programs
The Student Educational Employment Program provides federal employment opportunities to students. There are three programs available:
- Student Career Experience Program (SCEP)
- Student Temporary Experience Program (STEP)
- Diversity Intern Program
Student Career Experience Program (SCEP):
The Bureau of Reclamation hires students to work in a variety of positions while attending school. Students have the opportunity to experience working in their field of study with the benefits of year-round employment and flexible work schedules and assignments. Students gain exposure in public service while enhancing their educational goals and shaping their career choices.

- Enrollment in an accredited institution of higher education
- Students must be pursuing a degree in a field related to the work for which hired
- Maintain a cumulative GPA of 2.5
- Enrolled at least half time (6 hours)
- Provide a current transcript and proof of enrollment at the beginning of each semester/quarter
- Upon completion of 640 hours of career-related work, and graduation from an accredited school, the student is eligible for permanent employment
- Pay ranges from $9.77 - $13.54 per hour
- Vacation and sick days
- Coverage by the Federal Employees Retirement System
- Students are eligible for both life and health insurance coverage
- Students will receive assistance for travel and transportation when required to travel

Student Temporary Experience Program (STEP):
The Student Temporary Experience Program allows students to work in a temporary position for up to one year. The types of positions available vary depending on agency need.

- Enrolled at least half time (6 hours)
- Provide proof of enrollment at the beginning of each semester or quarter
- Maintain a cumulative GPA of 2.5
- Educational institutions can include: high school, vocational schools, community college, or university
- Pay ranges from $7.35 - $11.31 per hour

- Students will receive assistance for travel and transportation when required to travel

Diversity Intern Program:
The Bureau of Reclamation strives to increase diversity in its workforce by providing internship opportunities. This program provides talented, hardworking interns an opportunity to explore careers at various Department of Interior sites.
- Merge academic study with practical applications for students majoring in relevant fields and related disciplines
- Create a pool of talented students interested in federal employment, and provide an opportunity for these students to experience working for the federal government
- Provide professional experience for ethnically diverse students and students with disabilities
- Students earn academic credit
- Department of the Interior bureaus/offices identify internship opportunities, specify preferred education, skill and other credentials, make final selections, and provide intern supervision and mentoring
- Interns are paid by the respective nonprofit organization
- Pay ranges from:
- Sophomore/Junior - $420.00/week
- Senior - $450.00/week
- Law/Graduate Student - $520.00/week
- Maintain a cumulative GPA of 3.0
- Currently enrolled as a sophomore or above, in good standing
