Biosketch:
Dr. Karl F. Malik is both Special Assistant to the Director, DEA and Director of DEA’s Office of Research Evaluation and Analysis (OREA). Dr. Malik earned his Ph.D. in Molecular and Behavioral Neuroscience from Rutgers University and performed post-doctoral work within the Laboratory of Molecular and Cellular Biology at the National Institute of Mental Health. Dr. Malik then switched career directions and co-founded MarkSport, Inc., an America Online partner company focused on producing outdoors-related content for online audiences. He rose to become President and CEO of the company, responsible for all day-to-day and strategic business operations. In 2001 Dr. Malik joined NIH’s Center for Scientific Review (CSR) where he rapidly became part of CSR’s senior leadership. He held several positions simultaneously at CSR including Associate Director of Science Policy and Director, Office of Planning, Evaluation and Analysis. Dr. Malik joined NIDDK in late 2005.
In addition to his regular duties, Dr. Malik is active in trans-NIH service. He served as Executive Secretary of the Peer Review Advisory Committee and presently serves on several standing trans-NIH committees including the Staff Training in Extramural Program committee and the Technical Merit Review Committee, which reviews the technical merit of proposals to use NIH Evaluation Set-Aside funds. Dr. Malik is also presently serving on the advisory committee overseeing an evaluation of the NIH Animal Services Program.
