Biosketch:

Dr. Francisco O. Calvo is the Chief of the NIDDK’s Review Branch. Dr. Calvo received the Ph.D. degree in Physiology/Reproductive Endocrinology from the Department of Molecular and Integrative Physiology at the University of Illinois, Champaign-Urbana. After post-doctoral research, he took a position as a research associate and later instructor in endocrinology, Department of Biochemistry and Molecular Biology, Mayo Clinic and Foundation School of Medicine. His primary research focus dealt with ovulation, protein hormone chemical modification, and fertility control.  In 1987, Dr. Calvo joined NIDDK where he held a number of positions, including Director of the Endocrinology Research Program, Project Officer for the National Hormone Distribution Program and Project Officer for the Steroid Reference Collection, Mill Hill, United Kingdom.  He was appointed to his current position in 2001.

 

Dr. Calvo has served on a number of NIDDK and trans-NIH committees some of which include the Revision of the SRA Handbook, Rating of Grant Applications Subcommittee, the NIH Working Group on Lay Consumer Involvement in Clinical Research, the Scientific Review and Evaluation Activities Working Group, and the Committee on Redefining the Role of the Scientific Review Administrator and Program Officer. He currently serves on the Review Policy Committee, the Hispanic Advisory Board to the NIH Director, the Loan Repayment Program Steering Committee, the NIDDK Working Group on Clinical Trials, and the NIDDK Extramural Policy and Procedures Committee.

 

Dr. Calvo is a past member of the editorial board of the Biology of Reproduction, and has served on the Minority Activities Committee and has been a Co-chair of scientific sessions.  He has served on a number of scientific review committees. Dr. Calvo has also been a guest speaker on NIH policy and review procedures at many academic institutions, and is active in minority affairs initiatives with Hispanic children and teenagers within and outside of NIH.
