Disability Compensation VA pays
a monthly monetary benefit to veterans who are disabled by injury or
disease incurred or aggravated in the line of duty during active
military service. The amount of compensation varies with the degree of
disability and the number of dependents. Currently, the compensation
amounts range from $115 monthly for a 10-percent disability to $2,471
monthly for a 100-percent disability, with additional amounts payable
for special circumstances associated with the disability. VA disability
compensation is tax-free. Last year, more than 2.7 million veterans and
dependents received disability compensation or survivors benefits. Certain disabled servicemembers and veterans may be eligible for up to $11,000 to purchase an automobile or other conveyance. VA will also provide each person the adaptive equipment necessary to operate the automobile or other conveyance. Fiduciary matters for veterans Public Law 108-454 addressed the needs of our more vulnerable veterans, those who require a fiduciary to handle – on the veteran’s behalf – monetary benefits received by VA. VA is now required to conduct an inquiry or investigation as to the fitness of the fiduciary prior to appointment, as well as conduct periodic on-site reviews. If it is determined a misuse of benefits is due to the Secretary’s failure to investigate or monitor a fiduciary, the Secretary would be required to repay the misused benefits to the veteran. |
