Rep. Vic Snyder (D-AR), left above, cites his own experiences as a doctor during the recent Veterans’ Affairs Subcommittee on Health hearing on VA capital assets. At right above, Rep. Dave Weldon (R-FL), another physician Member of Congress, testified before the Subcommittee on the possible national applications of a project in his district.

He was followed by a panel led by Stephen P. Backhus, center, below, Director of Veterans’ Affairs and Military Health Care Issues for the General Accounting Office’s Health, Education, and Human Services Division. Backhus was accompanied by two Assistant Directors, Walter Gembacz, left, and Paul Reynolds.

He was joined on the panel by Gordon Mansfield, Executive Director, Paralyzed Veterans of America, and Jacqueline Garrick, Deputy Director, National Veterans Affairs and Rehabilitation Commission, The American Legion. The final panel, right, was led by Dr. Frances M. Murphy, M.D., M.P.H., the VA’s Acting Deputy Under Secretary for Policy and Management. She was accompanied by, from left, Terrence S. Batliner, DDS, Director of VA’s VISN 19, Charles V. Yarbrough, VA’s Chief Facilities Management Office, and Dennis Smith, Director, Maryland Health Care System.
