Description: This primitive trail (little to no
maintenance) offers the hiker a challenging workout. It winds up
through the South Fork Canyon, fording the river several times.
As you near the end of the trail, Beal Lake and Mud Lake offer excellent
spots to look for a camp sight. Blue Lake, Meadow Lake, and Horseshoe
Lake are often crowded, so if you are looking for privacy you may
want to choose a more isolated spot.
ACCESS:
Butte Falls: Take Highway 821
east out of town for 1.0 mile until you reach the Prospect-Butte
Falls Highway. Turn north and continue 9.0 miles until you reach
Forest Service road 34. Turn east and continue 8.5 miles to Forest
Service road 37. Turn south and continue 5 miles to road 720.
Follow road 720 for one mile until you reach the trailhead. There
is room for several cars along the side of the road.
Prospect: Take the Prospect-Butte
Falls Highway towards Butte Falls for 16 miles until you reach
Forest Service road 34. Turn east and follow the directions from
above.
