Congressman Reyes participated in the Ribbon Cutting Event for Western Technical College’s Eastside Mission Valley Campus. His prepared remarks follow:

Thank you for inviting me here today to participate in this event marking the opening of Western Tech’s Eastside Mission Valley Campus.

I would like to express my gratitude to Randy Kuykendall and everyone associated with the college for making this beautiful new campus a reality. I would also like to take a moment to recognize Nick Glakas, president of the Career College Association, who is here all the way from Washington, DC.

More than just the expansion of a great El Paso institution, the symbolism of this new Western Tech facility is fantastic. Western Tech’s newest campus is inside an old garment factory. That industry has largely left El Paso, but the workers remain. Many of those workers will now be receiving training for new and better careers at Western Tech, and that’s something we can all truly celebrate.

Institutions like Western Tech are important to El Paso because:

1) they provide training to people looking for new careers and better jobs to support their families and 2) they improve El Paso’s workforce so that we as a city can compete for 21st Century jobs and build a stronger economic base.

With the exciting changes that BRAC and the new Future Combat Systems initiative will bring to Fort Bliss in the coming years, hi-tech training like that offered by Western Tech will be essential to our success as a community.

I am excited to help kick off what will be yet another part in the engine that will drive El Paso forward into an even better future. Thanks again for having me here today, and congratulations on the new campus!
