Reyes meets with President Bush to discuss immigration reform

4/25/2007
Washington, D.C.
News

Congressman Reyes met with President Bush at the White House to discuss comprehensive immigration reform.

Congressman Silvestre Reyes, D-El Paso, and other Hispanic Members of Congress met with President George W. Bush at the White House today to discuss comprehensive immigration reform and the Security Through Regularized Immigration and a Vibrant Economy Act of 2007 (STRIVE) Act. Reyes, a 26 ½ year veteran of the U.S. Border Patrol and long considered a leader in border security and immigration issues in the U.S. House of Representatives, is an original cosponsor of the STRIVE Act.

“As I’ve said throughout my career in Congress, the time for immigration reform is long overdue,” said Reyes. “President Bush has signaled that he would like to see immigration reform as part of his legacy, and if that is to be the case, he is going to have to work with the new Congress. I think today’s meeting reflected the new political realities of the 110th Congress. It was productive and, I hope, the start of more to come.”

Reyes will testify tomorrow before the House Judiciary Subcommittee on Immigration at their hearing entitled “Proposals for Improving the Electronic Employment Verification and Worksite Enforcement System.” Reyes is the lead Democrat on H.R. 98, which would substantially expand and improve on the 1986 Immigration Reform and Control Act by enhancing the security of Social Security cards and allowing employers to instantaneously verify a prospective employee's eligibility to work in the United States.
