Prescribed Burning

[Photo]: Fire managers performing a prescribed fire.A prescribed fire is any fire intentionally ignited to meet specific land management objectives, to reduce flammable fuels, such as the accumulation of brush, logs, and debris on forest floors; or to help restore ecosystem health. Prescribed fires are preplanned ignitions, with predetermined boundaries. They are conducted only under certain weather conditions when flame length and heat can be controlled. Land managers must obtain approval of prescribed fire plans from applicable federal and state agencies before conducting any planned burns. In addition, all applicable requirements under the National Environmental Policy Act must be met on federal lands.   Learn more about the Mendocino National Forest Prescribed Burn Program »

Wildland Fire Use

A Wildland Fire Use fire provides an opportunity for wildfire to play a more natural role in the ecosystem - improving vegetation conditions, removing un-naturally high levels of fuels, and creating a "patchwork" landscape for wildlife habitat. As a Wildland Fire Use fire, a management perimeter is set and the fire is managed as a natural process within this perimeter. If the fire threatens to go outside this perimeter, or threatens private lands or structures, then appropriate actions are taken.

National Fire Plan

A National Fire Plan has been developed through cooperation of all federal agencies to hire and coordinate suppression forces, treat hazardous forest fuels, work with local communities and provide leadership into the 21st century to suppress wildland fires caused by 80 years of fire suppression. The plan provides the funding and guidance to hire, equip and train wildland fire fighters, and reduce hazardous fuels while emphasizing protection and safety of the public and the fire fighters. The National Fire Plan is explained in great detail within the National Fire Plan web page.
