Accessible Recreation

Accessible Recreation Opportunities

A continuing goal of the Mendocino National Forest is to make these recreational opportunities accessible to persons with disabilities. Although many of these areas already have wheelchair-accessible campsites, restrooms and trails, we are continuing to make more sites accessible.

The Forest Service has adopted the universal design approach to site accessibility which takes into consideration the differing physical capabilities of visitors. We invite you to discover and visit the Mendocino National Forest.

Areas by Ranger District that are currently accessible are listed below. (Not all locations/facilities are 100% accessible.) Because we are continually adding new accessible sites, please call ahead to the Ranger District for more information.

Covelo Ranger District

Hammerhorn Campground is located at Hammerhorn Lake. Activities include camping, lake access, fishing and picnicking. Accessible facilities include: restroom, picnic tables and the Hammerhorn Trail (1/4 mi.) which leads along the lake shore from the accessible campground to two fully accessible fishing piers.

Grindstone Ranger District

Letts Lake Campground and Trail (1 mile) leads along the lake shore from accessible restrooms to a popular fully-accessible fishing pier.

Fire Fighter Memorial Overlook Kiosk is located on Forest Highway 7 (County road 307) at Grindstone Canyon Overlook. Fully accessible facilities include toilet, picnic table, kiosk, and paved walkway.

Fouts Spring Area Visitor Station is located at the entrance of Fouts Recreation Area on Forest Road M10. Available facilities include accessible restrooms and a self-service information kiosk.

Red Bluff Recreation Area is located east of the city of Red Bluff in the Sacramento Valley. This area includes the Lake Red Bluff Trail (3 mile), which is accessible and paved. The trail travels along the Sacramento River and through a wildlife/riparian viewing area. The facilities include accessible restrooms with showers, a boat ramp and campground.

Upper Lake Ranger District

*The Fuller Grove Picnic Area and boat ramp are located on Lake Pillsbury. The primary activities here are boat launching and wildlife viewing. The facilities include accessible restrooms, drinking fountain, parking, picnic tables and pedestal grills.

Pogie Point Accessible Sites

*Fuller Grove Group Camp is located at Lake Pillsbury adjacent to Fuller boat ramp. Accessible facilities include tables, fire rings, a food storage locker and restrooms. Group capacity is 60 persons or less per night. For reservations and price information, call the Upper Lake Ranger District.

*Pogie Point Campground has 5 new accessible campsites on concrete pads and four sites on dirt with restrooms, tables, and fire rings. One site is also available at the Pogie Point Picnic Area.

*Pillsbury Pines Picnic Area and boat ramp are located on the east shore of Lake Pillsbury. Boat launching and picnicking are the primary activities. The facilities include accessible restroom, picnic tables and pedestal grills.

*Navy Camp is located next to the Gravelly Valley Air Strip. Accessible facilities include tables, fire rings, and restrooms.

Genetic Resource & Conservation Center

Comanche Trail (1 mile loop) Visitors can stroll through this self-guided, wheel chair-accessible nature trail and enjoy lunch at one of the five trail-side picnic spots. The 3/4 mile hard surface trail winds through mixed stands of mature trees with walk bridges crossing small stream beds.
