Functional Description The federal agency (the Children?s Bureau) provides grants to States, Tribes and communities to operate a range of child welfare services including child protective services (CPS), family preservation and support, foster care, adoption and independent living. 
Interfaces The Child Welfare Program is not heavily dependent on automated interfaces in New Mexico. The attorneys are in-house staff and there is no reliance on district attorneys. Although some of the investigative information is stored on external systems, the attorneys still have most of the information in hard copy files as well. Other Relevant Information The Children, Youth and Families Department, Protective Services Division administers the New Mexico Child Welfare Program. It is a state administered program with approximately 900 staff statewide in 33 local offices. The program utilizes foster care homes and group residential facilities throughout the state, and has a number of other business partners such as law enforcement and the court system. Currently, there are approximately 2,200 to 2,300 children in the custody of the state. The Protective Services Division provides services to all children in the state, including Native Americans.The intake and eligibility process includes abuse and neglect referrals, child welfare agency and adoption inquiries, intensive family service program cases, outreach, and history checks. Case maintenance includes additional functions of monitoring and supervision, emergency response, vendor payments, and services to families. The intake function in New Mexico is handled through State Centralized Intake located in Albuquerque via a toll free telephone system
