EDUCATION PROGRAMS
Scientific and
engineering staff at the Laboratory total more than 300, with about 150 graduate students
comprising a vital part of that total. A unique relationship with Iowa State University allows Ames Lab researchers to
serve as professors, work with ISU faculty on collaborative projects and include graduate
students in Lab research. This interaction benefits the researchers, the students and the
institutions.
The Laboratory reaches out to attract precollege students to science through innovative
programs, many capitalizing on opportunities available through the Lab's close ties with
ISU programs and the ISU College of Education. Examples of the Lab's education programs
include:
-
- Teacher Education and Achievement in Math and Science Program (TEAMS)
- TEAMS consists of 10-12 undergraduate students, four Ames Lab scientists, four
elementary teachers and four ISU College of Education faculty. Selected students work in
research groups at the Lab and as aides in elementary math and science classrooms. During
the semester-long program each student develops and presents a classroom lesson based on
his/her experience at Ames Lab. Lessons that are developed are also shared with ISU math
and elementary education classes.
-
- Summer Student Trainee Program
- Each year Ames Lab offers approximately 20 undergraduate science majors from U.S.
colleges and universities a chance to experience real-world science. Students taking part
in the program work in vital research areas, collaborate with internationally known
scientists and are exposed to highly sophisticated, state-of-the-art equipment. The
program emphasizes integrating students as contributing members of active research
programs and motivating them to pursue graduate study.
In addition, the Lab's Public Affairs Office coordinates numerous outreach activities
to showcase Lab activities to student, government and industry audiences. Lab experts also
participate in numerous technology and student recruitment activities.
