Discussion:
On Sunday 6/25/00, the licensee informed the NRC of an oil spill that was
the result of recent heavy rains and an excessive amount of oil in the
oil separator pit for the site storm sewers. The licensee estimated that
approximately 5 gallons of oil had spilled. The licensee made the ENS
notification in conjunction with notification of other government
agencies (National Response Center and Illinois Emergency Management
Agency). The majority of the oil was identified in drainage ditches on
the site and currently the quantity released is unknown. While still
gathering data, the licensee now estimates the volume to be several
thousand gallons and some has been identified offsite. The licensee is
working with a contractor (Clean Harbors) for cleaning up the spilled
oil. Samples of the oil have been tested for radioactivity and none has
been detected. The oil spill is not presenting any threat to plant safety
and the licensee will keep the NRC informed of clean-up activities. The
event has generated interest in the public and news media.
