Overton County

Overton County

County History and Information:
Overton County was established in 1806 and was named after Judge John Overton, a friend of Andrew Jackson, State Supreme Court Justice and co-founder of the City of Memphis. During the Civil War, in April, 1865, Captain John Francis and a band of Confederate rebels from Kentucky burned down the original courthouse. However, James Richardson, then County Register of Deeds, saved the county records by hiding the county deed books in a cellar in his home. Overton County is the home of Standing Stone State Park.
