Biography:

James Lightbourne received his PhD in Mathematics at North Carolina State University in 1976.  His areas of research have been in partial differential equations, initially partial differential equations in abstract spaces and later work in multi-phase flow models.  He joined the faculty at Pan American University in 1976 and at West Virginia University in 1979.  Subsequently, he held a Visiting Research Position at the Mathematics Research Center of the University of Wisconsin-Madison.  He served as Director of Graduate Studies of the WVU Department of Mathematics and became Chair of the Department in 1988.

In 1991, he took a leave of absence from WVU to assume a rotator position in the NSF Division of Undergraduate Education to manage the NSF Calculus Program.  In 1992, he accepted a permanent position at NSF as a Section Head in the Division.  He has also served as the Director of the Division of Graduate Education, and Senior Advisor for the NSF Directorate for Education and Human Resources.  He currently is Senior Advisor in the Office of the Director and Acting Director of the NSF Office of Equal Opportunity Programs.
