Figure 5.16 is a U.S. map showing percentages reporting past year any illicit drug dependence among persons aged 26 or older, by State, for 2000. States listed here in alphabetical order within each group were divided into five groups based on the magnitude of their percentages. States in the highest group (0.86 to 1.25 percent) were Arizona, California, Colorado, Connecticut, Delaware, District of Columbia, Maryland, Massachusetts, and Washington. States in the next highest group (0.75 to 0.85 percent) were Alaska, Arkansas, Georgia, Hawaii, Louisiana, Mississippi, Nevada, New Mexico, New York, Oregon, and Vermont. States in the mid group (0.65 to 0.74 percent) were Alabama, Florida, Kentucky, Oklahoma, Pennsylvania, South Carolina, Tennessee, Virginia, West Virginia, and Wisconsin. States in the next lowest group (0.58 to 0.64 percent) were Idaho, Illinois, Kansas, Minnesota, Missouri, Nebraska, New Jersey, North Carolina, Rhode Island, Texas, and Utah. States in the lowest group (0.47 to 0.57 percent) were Indiana, Iowa, Maine, Michigan, Montana, New Hampshire, North Dakota, Ohio, South Dakota, and Wyoming.
