Figure 5.11 is a U.S. map showing percentages reporting past year any illicit drug dependence or abuse among persons aged 18 to 25, by State, for 2000. States listed here in alphabetical order within each group were divided into five groups based on the magnitude of their percentages. States in the highest group (6.19 to 7.23 percent) were Alaska, Connecticut, Maryland, Massachusetts, New Hampshire, New York, Oregon, Pennsylvania, Vermont, and Wyoming. States in the next highest group (5.84 to 6.18 percent) were Alabama, Arizona, Colorado, Delaware, Florida, Kentucky, Louisiana, Maine, Mississippi, and Nevada. States in the mid group (5.33 to 5.83 percent) were District of Columbia, Hawaii, Indiana, Michigan, New Jersey, North Carolina, Ohio, Oklahoma, Rhode Island, Tennessee, and Utah. States in the next lowest group (4.91 to 5.32 percent) were Arkansas, California, Idaho, Illinois, Montana, New Mexico, South Carolina, Texas, Virginia, and Wisconsin. States in the lowest group (3.78 to 4.90 percent) were Georgia, Iowa, Kansas, Minnesota, Missouri, Nebraska, North Dakota, South Dakota, Washington, and West Virginia.
