Figure 4.11 is a U.S. map showing percentages reporting perceptions of great risk of smoking one or more packs of cigarettes per day among persons aged 18 to 25, by State, for 1999 and 2000. States listed here in alphabetical order within each group were divided into five groups based on the magnitude of their percentages. States in the highest group (64.36 to 75.07 percent) were California, District of Columbia, Florida, Hawaii, Massachusetts, Nevada, New York, Rhode Island, South Carolina, and Utah. States in the next highest group (62.75 to 64.35 percent) were Arizona, Georgia, Louisiana, Maryland, Mississippi, New Jersey, New Mexico, Texas, Vermont, and Washington. States in the mid group (61.09 to 62.74 percent) were Alabama, Alaska, Colorado, Connecticut, Delaware, Idaho, Maine, Montana, New Hampshire, Oklahoma, and Virginia. States in the next lowest group (57.96 to 61.08 percent) were Arkansas, Illinois, Indiana, Michigan, Missouri, North Dakota, Oregon, Pennsylvania, Tennessee, and West Virginia. States in the lowest group (53.42 to 57.95 percent) were Iowa, Kansas, Kentucky, Minnesota, Nebraska, North Carolina, Ohio, South Dakota, Wisconsin, and Wyoming.
