States listed here in alphabetical order within each group were divided into five groups based on the magnitude of their percentages. States in the highest group (32.46 to 38.48 percent) were Alabama, Arkansas, Kentucky, Mississippi, Missouri, Nevada, Ohio, Oklahoma, Tennessee, and West Virginia. States in the next highest group (30.66 to 32.45 percent) were Alaska, Georgia, Idaho, Indiana, Louisiana, Michigan, Minnesota, Montana, North Carolina, and Wyoming. States in the mid group (29.05 to 30.65 percent) were Colorado, Delaware, Florida, Illinois, Iowa, North Dakota, Oregon, Pennsylvania, Rhode Island, South Carolina, and Washington. States in the next lowest group (27.35 to 29.04 percent) were Arizona, Kansas, Maine, Nebraska, New Mexico, New Hampshire, South Dakota, Texas, Vermont, and Wisconsin. States in the lowest group (19.73 to 27.34 percent) were California, Connecticut, District of Columbia, Hawaii, Maryland, Massachusetts, New York, New Jersey, Utah, and Virginia.
