Figure 4.2 is a U.S. map showing percentages reporting past month use of any tobacco product among youths aged 12 to 17, by State, for 1999 and 2000. States listed here in alphabetical order within each group were divided into five groups based on the magnitude of their percentages. States in the highest group (19.97 to 26.03 percent) were Arkansas, Colorado, Kentucky, Minnesota, Montana, North Dakota, South Dakota, Tennessee, West Virginia, and Wyoming. States in the next highest group (18.72 to 19.96 percent) were Alaska, Connecticut, Delaware, Indiana, Iowa, Mississippi, Missouri, North Carolina, Ohio, and Wisconsin. States in the mid group (17.41 to 18.71 percent) were Alabama, Illinois, Maine, Nevada, New Mexico, New Hampshire, Oklahoma, Oregon, Pennsylvania, South Carolina, and Vermont. States in the next lowest group (14.88 to 17.40 percent) were Georgia, Kansas, Louisiana, Maryland, Massachusetts, Michigan, Nebraska, Rhode Island, Texas, and Washington. States in the lowest group (10.36 to 14.87 percent) were Arizona, California, District of Columbia, Florida, Hawaii, Idaho, New York, New Jersey, Utah, and Virginia.
