July 30, 2008, MURFREESBORO – The Murfreesboro Fire Department will receive a $63,277 U.S. Department of Homeland Security grant for operations and safety equipment, U.S. Rep. Bart Gordon announced.
“Countless lives and properties have been saved through the valiant efforts of firefighters,” said Gordon, a member of the Congressional Fire Services Caucus. “The Assistance to Firefighters Grants program provides opportunities for local fire departments to acquire much-needed equipment and vehicles.”
The Murfreesboro Fire Department will use the funds to purchase thermal imaging cameras and rapid intervention equipment, which includes ropes, pulleys, search kits and rotary rescue saws, according to Department Coordinator Laurie Alsup.
“The thermal imaging cameras have color screens that can read up to 2,000 degrees Fahrenheit. This feature will allow firefighters to determine dangerous fire situations before they occur and locate downed firefighters and possible victims,” Alsup said. “Currently, our department has four thermal imaging cameras. With an additional seven cameras, we will be able to provide each fire district with a camera.”
