March 24, 2008, U.S. Rep. Bart Gordon is reminding Sumner County residents and business owners affected by February’s severe storms and tornadoes to register with the Federal Emergency Management Agency before the approaching deadline.
Residents and business owners in Macon and Sumner counties have until April 7 to register for FEMA assistance and return applications for disaster loans from the U.S. Small Business Administration. The registration deadline for Trousdale County residents and business owners is April 12.
“This assistance is not just for people without insurance; it can also help if you are underinsured,” said Gordon. “It’s better to take the time to register now and not need the assistance than to find out you are underinsured but have missed the registration deadline.”
Registration for FEMA is required to become eligible for temporary housing assistance, grants for medical expenses and assistance from the SBA. The SBA can help residents with the costs of replacing personal property, vehicle repair or replacement, and moving and storage expenses.
“The costs of temporary housing, repairing or rebuilding homes and replacement of personal belongings add up quickly,” said Gordon. “Taking a few minutes to register now can save hundreds of dollars down the road.”
Business owners may be eligible to receive SBA assistance for property damage and economic injury as a result of lost revenue due to the storms.
