November 14, 2007, WASHINGTON – Today, members of the fiscally conservative Democratic Blue Dog Coalition honored U.S. Rep. Bart Gordon for his ongoing commitment to restoring responsibility and accountability to government by implementing commonsense fiscal policies such as pay-as-you-go budget rules.
“The Blue Dogs are committed to balancing our budget, demonstrating fiscal responsibility and producing good results for our country,” said Gordon. “We put aside partisanship and focus on common sense solutions to reduce deficit spending because our deficit is a tax our children and grandchildren are going to bear.”
As the chairman of the House Committee on Science and Technology, Gordon has been a leader in efforts to reestablish Congress’ commitment to fiscal restraint as a way to promote U.S. competitiveness in an increasingly global economy.
“As a leader in Congress and member of the Blue Dog Coalition, Representative Gordon is committed to restoring the fiscal integrity of our nation and ensuring the economic prosperity of generations to come,” said Rep. Mike Ross (D-AR), Blue Dog Co-Chair for Communications. “Rep. Gordon has taken real steps to improve our competitiveness in the world and guarantee that the American people continue to have access to high quality jobs.”
Under the leadership of Gordon and the Blue Dog Coalition, the new Congress has strictly enforced PAYGO to control spending practices of the federal government. As a direct result of the efforts of the Coalition, the House rules package for the 110th Congress included a commitment to PAYGO rules, with no new deficit spending. Since then, every single one of the approximately 360 bills that has passed the House has complied with PAYGO.
The fiscally conservative Democratic Blue Dog Coalition was formed in 1995 with the goal of representing the center of the House of Representatives and appealing to the mainstream values of the American public. The Blue Dogs are dedicated to a core set of beliefs that transcend partisan politics, including a deep commitment to the financial stability and national security of the United States. Currently there are 47 members of the Blue Dog Coalition.
