Gallatin Receives $80,000 Grant For Greenway Extension

February 14, 2007, GALLATIN – The City of Gallatin will receive an $80,000 National Park Service grant to join walking trails at Triple Creek Park with the city’s greenway, announced U.S. Rep. Bart Gordon.

“Gallatin’s greenway will not only provide residents with an opportunity to walk, jog, and ride bikes, but it will also conserve the natural setting around Town Creek, boost property values and contribute to economic development,” said Gordon.

City of Gallatin engineering assistant Mike Goff said the grant will allow the city to unite existing trails in Triple Creek Park and make connections to the city’s greenway both at the park’s entrance and on the rear side of Municipal Park.

“It’s definitely going to help the city’s park system and make our parks more attractive as the city grows,” said Goff. “It’s about quality of life and providing amenities to residents, giving them safe places to walk and exercise. It’s a good return on our money.”

When completed, Goff said the city’s greenway will link Triple Creek Park, Municipal Park, Benny Bills Elementary School, Shafer Middle School, four residential subdivisions, the city’s residential historical district and the downtown square.

In 2005, Gordon secured $532,000 in federal funding to help Gallatin launch its greenway.

“We thank Congressman Gordon for his assistance in securing these funds,” said Gallatin Mayor Jo Ann Graves. “This grant will help us move forward as we work to build our greenway.

“Walking trails serve as an alternative form of transportation. People can use them to get outside and enjoy the outdoors. They are an educational resource for children who get outdoors and enjoy all nature has to offer. Greenways are tremendous amenities for our communities.”
