Alcohol-and Drug-Related Visits to Hospital Emergency Departments: 1992 National Hospital Ambulatory Medical Care Survey Advance Data 251. In 1992, 89.9 million visits were made to emergency departments (EDs) of non-Federal, short-stay and general hospitals in the United States. This represents approximately 357 visits per 1,000 persons. An estimated 4.1 million of these ED visits (4.5 percent) were alcohol related and/or drug related (ADR), about 16 visits per 1,000 persons. The information presented in this report is based on ED data obtained from the 1992 National Hospital Ambulatory Medical Care Survey (NHAMCS). Data Highlights:
