AMENDMENT PROCESS FOR H.R. 1, THE NO CHILD LEFT BEHIND ACT OF 2001

The Rules Committee is planning to meet the week of May 14th to grant a rule which may limit the amendment process on H.R. 1, the No Child Left Behind Act of 2001. The bill was ordered reported by the Education and the Workforce Committee on May 9th, and is expected to be filed on Monday, May 14th.

Any Member wishing to offer an amendment should submit 55 copies of the amendment and one copy of a very brief explanation of the amendment to the Rules Committee in room H-312 of the Capitol no later than noon on Tuesday, May 15th. The form used to submit amendments to the Rules Committee is available on the Rules Committee website. Amendments should be drafted to the text of H.R. 1 as ordered reported by the Education and the Workforce Committee. The text is available at the Education and the Workforce Committee and will be posted on its web site Friday, May 11th.

Members should use the Office of Legislative Counsel to ensure that their amendments are properly drafted and should check with the Office of the Parliamentarian to be certain their amendments comply with the rules of the House.
