Marti Klein was appointed to the position of Public Member
with the AQMD Hearing Board in June 1995. A native of Southern California, she
currently resides in Orange County.
With thirty years of experience in the
environmental and related fields, Marti brings a multidisciplinary approach to the Hearing
Board. In addition to air quality, her specialties include public health,
economics, and real estate and land use issues. She received her Master of Urban
and Regional Planning degree from San Jose State University, and her bachelor's
degree in Geography from UCLA, where she was elected a charter member of the
university's Environmental Studies Institute. In addition, she completed
graduate work in Epidemiology and Environmental Health at California State
University, Northridge.
She began her career in the Los Angeles City and Santa
Clara County planning departments, and as a real estate research consultant
serving major Southern California real estate developers. While in graduate
school, she served as a research assistant to the Rand Corporation, and as an
independent research consultant to clients such as the U.S. Veterans'
Administration and local hospitals and universities. Prior to joining the
Hearing Board, she was employed in the private industrial sector as a consulting
environmental planner and scientist, and managed environmental compliance
programs for a major aerospace manufacturer.
Marti is currently enrolled and taking classes in the
Administrative Law and Dispute Resolution Certificate programs of the National
Judicial College of the American Bar Association.
In addition to her duties on the Hearing Board, Marti
teaches Geography at Saddleback College and Irvine Valley College, and is
co-owner of a corporate communications consulting firm. She also serves on the faculty of the Advanced Hearing Board Workshop of
the California Air Resources Board. Currently a member of the National
Association of Administrative Law Judges, she has been active throughout her
career in professional organizations and as a volunteer for charitable
organizations such as the March of Dimes and California Mental Health
Association and local arts organizations such as the Philharmonic Society and South Coast Repertory Theatre.
In her spare time, she designs canine couture for her discerning clients.
