NIDDK Center Award Mechanisms and Classifications

In its support of biomedical research at colleges and universities, teaching hospitals and other institutions, the NIH employs a range of research and research center award mechanisms. Center awards, in particular, have often been regarded as a valuable approach for research that is likely to benefit from a multidisciplinary, team-based approach, especially investigations aimed at understanding complex biomedical systems and translating basic scientific discoveries into useful clinical applications.

NIDDK Centers Mechanisms At-A-Glance

P20

Exploratory Centers

To support planning for new programs, expansion, or modification of existing resources and feasibility studies

P30

Center Core Grants

To support shared resources and facilities for research by many investigators

P50

Specialized Centers

To support any part of the full range of research from very basic to clinical

P60

Comprehensive Centers

To support a multipurpose unit designed to unite divergent but related facilities within a given community

R24

Resource-Related Research Projects

To support research projects that will enhance the capability of resources servicing biomedical research.

P20: Exploratory Centers

Exploratory Centers (P20) support planning for new programs, expansion or modification of existing resources, and feasibility studies to explore various approaches to the development of interdisciplinary programs that offer a potential solution to problems of special significance to NIDDK. These exploratory studies may lead to development of specialized or comprehensive centers.

P30: Center Core Grants

Center Core Grants (P30) support shared resources and facilities for use by multiple investigators to enhance multidisciplinary approaches and collaborative research efforts focused on a common research problem or goal. The core grant is utilized by independently funded research projects.

P50: Specialized Centers

Specialized Centers (P50) support any part of the full range of research from very basic to clinical; they may involve ancillary support activities such as protracted patient care necessary to the primary research or limited core facilities. Support activities are designed to enhance multidisciplinary studies on a specific disease entity or biomedical problem area.

P60: Comprehensive Centers

Comprehensive Centers (P60) support a multipurpose unit designed to unite divergent but related research activities and facilities within a given community. It may be based in a university or involve other locally available resources such as hospitals, computer facilities, regional centers, and primate colonies. The objectives of P60s typically include: Fostering biomedical research and development both at the fundamental and clinical levels; Designing and expanding community education, screening, and counseling programs; educating health professionals concerning the problems of diagnosis and treatment of a specific disease.
