Friday, January 9, 2009

Washington, DC -- Congressman Steve Scalise was named to the House Transportation and Infrastructure (T&I) Committee last night and will maintain his post on the Veterans’ Affairs Committee.

“The Transportation and Infrastructure Committee has jurisdiction over many issues that are vital to our region,” Scalise said. “I plan on playing an active role in Corps oversight, FEMA and Stafford Act reform, and road improvements and expansions. We will also be working on port security issues which will create good jobs and generate economic development throughout Southeast Louisiana.”

The T & I Committee has jurisdiction over the following issues among others:

• Corps of Engineers
• FEMA and Emergency Management
• Water Resources and Environment
• Highways and Transit
• Port Security, Coast Guard and Maritime Transportation
• Aviation
• Railroads, Pipelines and Hazardous Materials
• Economic Development and Public Buildings

A full listing of priorities and responsibilities of the T & I Committee can be found at http://transportation.house.gov.

Congressman Scalise will also maintain his seat on the Veterans’ Affairs Committee and the Subcommittee on Economic Opportunity. Subcommittee assignments for the T & I Committee will likely be announced in the next week.

Scalise said, “I am looking forward to getting to work in both committees. We have a very high population of veterans in Southeast Louisiana and they have many issues that Congress needs to continue to work on. Our veterans have served our nation with honor and respect and I want to make sure they are treated the same way after their service.”
