S. 1899National Cancer Act of 2003
On November 20, 2003, Senator Sam Brownback (R-KS) introduced S. 1899, the National Cancer
Act of 2003. The bill would 1) enhance the current cancer registry system, 2) enhance existing
screening mechanisms, 3) create a new Patient Education Program, 4) enhance NCI’s Designated
Comprehensive Cancer Centers, 5) elevate the importance of pain management and survivorship
throughout the nation's cancer programs, 6) authorize the Office of Survivorship within NCI, 7) permit
NCI to engage private entities to further cancer research, and 8) provide patients with greater access to
experimental therapies. S. 1899 was referred to the Senate Committee on Health, Education, Labor
and Pensions.
