Clinical and Translational Science Awards

A national consortium, funded through Clinical and Translational Science Awards (CTSAs), is transforming how clinical and translational research is conducted, ultimately enabling researchers to provide new treatments more efficiently and quickly to patients.

Now comprising 38 academic health centers in 23 states (including 14 centers added in May 2008external link, opens in new window), the consortium ultimately will link about 60 institutions together to energize the discipline of clinical and translational science.

The consortium's Web site, CTSAweb.orgexternal link, opens in new window, ensures broad access to CTSA resources, enhances communication, and encourages information sharing.

The new program draws on NIH's earlier initiatives to re-engineer the clinical research enterprise, one of the key objectives of the NIH Roadmap for Medical Researchexternal link, opens in new window.

2009 Bench-to-Bedside Awards Program Expanding

The 2009 Bench-to-Bedside Awards program is expanding to enable extramural principal investigators with existing NIH grants (e.g., researchers at CTSA sites) to initiate proposals by seeking intramural partners at NIH to serve as the project leaders and points of contact. To identify an intramural collaborator, interested CTSA investigators should consult the NIH's database of all current intramural researchexternal link, opens in new window. Research proposals can fall into one of seven categories: pharmacogenomics, behavioral and social sciences, rare diseases, AIDS, minority health and health disparities, women's health, and general projects.
