Welcome to the Thurgood Marshall College Fund:
TMCF’s focus to prepare a new generation of minority leaders is paramount to keeping Justice Marshall’s legacy alive. I first met him as a junior in college during an internship at the Federal Judicial building in Washington, D.C. Watching his numerous accomplishments positively influenced my life, just as the installation of the first African American president and First Lady in the White House in 2009 is inspiring a new generation of students to lead.
Minority youth have been energized to new heights, and can now aspire to achieve a level of success that had been seen as unattainable for many of them. But at the same time, this country is struggling through very challenging economic times with a declining job market and disappearing manufacturing sector. The partnerships we undertake to increase the numbers of students graduating with the leadership skills and training necessary to compete and contribute to the economic vitality of our communities is more critical than ever. It tops our agenda. Meanwhile, the Obama Administration’s new education agenda includes a national goal to boost the number of Americans with at least one year or more of college education to 16 million people by 2020. HBCUs must do our part to ensure that minority students are well represented.
TMCF works with Corporate, Federal government and Foundation partners to develop major initiatives that arm HBCU students, alumni and faculty with innovative approaches to prepare them to lead. Our 2009 agenda includes several innovative programs, including:
Leadership Training. Enhancing our soft skills training modules for students through direct instruction at the annual Leadership Institute in New York that trains 600 students, and in on-line training through the iLearn portal that is now available to 236,000 students;
Clearance Compliance Program. Exposing students to a myriad of high paying professions in the government and private sectors that require security clearances, and preparing them for the rigorous process of interviews and background checks;
National School Reform. Transforming low-performing secondary schools by pairing them with HBCU professors, students and alumni who tutor students and encourage the parents to take an active role in their children’s academic development; and
Teacher Quality & Retention Program. Recruiting, preparing and retaining 10,000 new minority teachers from the 47 HBCUs, with special emphasis on recruiting African American males and STEM majors. Exposing them to intensive Regional Training Institutes and on-line training will prepare them for assignments in the neediest secondary schools. We are so excited to launch this innovative program with the Siemens Foundation. Here’s an overview:
Teacher Quality & Retention Program
TQRP has two broad components:
Training and supporting aspiring and new teachers, and
Recruiting science, technology, engineering and mathematics (STEM) majors, particularly African-American males, for public school classrooms in both urban and rural areas that desperately need qualified teachers.
The training program itself has three major elements:
Recruit more teachers by providing scholarships, guidance and career development while they’re in college;
Prepare teachers by sponsoring intensive regional Summer Institutes for pre-service teachers and STEM majors, and
Retain new teachers through early-career mentoring with seasoned educators, online support, and professional development.
The Teacher Training Institutes open in June and run through July at four locations: Washington, D.C.; Winston Salem, North Carolina; Pine Bluff, Arkansas; and San Jose, California. Teachers who are graduating education majors (pre-service) attend for 1-week sessions, while STEM majors attend for 4 weeks.
High expectations, student engagement, early strength’s identification and nurturing are all key to promoting retention and academic success for all students. HBCUs and other minority serving institutions will continue to serve as a major entry and access point for enhancing America’s college-going population.
We are committed to developing the “best of the best” leaders who will keep the legacy of Justice Thurgood Marshall alive through achieving educational excellence and then pass it on.
