GLOBE students at Kimball School in Concord, New Hampshire had an
exciting opportunity to demonstrate their GLOBE activities for a
very special guest on March 14, 1997. Gov. Jeanne Shaheen visited
Kimball to announce a $100,000 grant program for innovative
technology at elementary schools of New Hampshire, sponsored by the
NYNEX Corporation. Sixth grade students demonstrated how they use
the Internet for GLOBE activities and asked the governor to input
the data they had collected the previous day. According to GLOBE Teacher
Ms. Kathleen Mitchell, she graciously accepted the challenge and
successfully completed the task.
Earlier in the week, students at Kimball submitted the 500,000th
GLOBE student data report -- 13 mm solid precipitation total depth,
observed at 17:00 GMT on March 11, 1997. Ms.
Mitchell praised the work of sixth grader Jessica Martin and her
classmates for their commitment to regularly taking and reporting
the GLOBE measurements -- rain, snow, or shine! The school
principal, Mr. Kent Hemingway, also praised the students efforts at
a meeting of the PTO.
