Christopher Campione

Deputy Assistant Secretary for National Security

Christopher “Rocky” Campione has served the President in a number of positions at the Department of Energy since August 2004.  As Deputy Assistant Secretary for National Security, Rocky is responsible for congressional issues pertaining to cyber security, the Office of Intelligence and Counterintelligence, and the Office of Health, Safety, and Security.

Prior to joining the Department of Energy’s Office of Congressional Affairs, Mr. Campione served as the Senior Advisor to the Department’s Chief Information Officer helping to manage a $2.1 billion IT portfolio.  In this position, he was responsible for advising the CIO on Departmental management and security issues.  Moreover, he developed Departmental policy¬ that strengthened cyber security, and coordinated with other government agencies to leverage knowledge and tools to protect vital information systems and data.

Except for a one year stint working on a television show for NBC in Hollywood, CA, Mr. Campione’s career has been in the information technology field.  He began his career as a technician supporting a number of U.S. Senate offices.  Following this experience, Mr. Campione worked at the G8 Summit in Sea Island, Georgia.

Mr. Campione’s current interests are focused on how large IT organizations protect their environment.  In exploring these interests he has spoken to industry, academia, and government on topics that range from improving organizational risk management processes; changing the cyber security protection paradigm from one that is network based to one that is data centric; and educating government policy makers on the complex issues involved in cyber security protection.

Mr. Campione graduated from Syracuse University with Bachelor of Arts degrees in Political Science and History, and he has a Masters of Science degree from George Mason University in Technology Management.  He currently lives in Alexandria, VA with his wife and two children.
